WINTER DRIVING SKILLS WORKSHOP & MEETUP

January 29th, 2023   8:00am - 12:00pm

Meetup with camping available on January 28th

CANCELLED

Although a dichotomy, MasterDrive decided to cancel the workshop due to inclement weather. They prefer to instruct their skids in a more controlled fashion and didn't want to risk the Revels sliding into each other on the track.

THE TRAINING

The course will address the following concepts.

  1. The Masterful vehicle control available when focus is on the Personal Performance of the driver.

  2. The real meaning of and difference between “Traction” and “Grip” and how the driver can understand the causes and respond to slip.

  3. The core elements of modern tire technology capabilities and limitations.

  4. Breaking down the physics of the braking system and how the driver can manage the system’s performance.

  5. How to use Driver Aids to gain driver independence versus dependency.

  6. The clear importance of vision to the safety of the task of driving.

  7. How smoothness can increase the performance envelope of any vehicle.

  8. Shifting control of dynamics to the driver and the ‘roll’ of suspension.

THE EXERCISES

Slalom Exercise
______________

  1. Develop Kinesthetic connection and ‘feel’ for communication with the vehicle.

  2. Learn to use central and peripheral vision in harmony to see the big picture and more accurately predict and prepare for hazards.

  3. Refine the drive inputs to the controls of the vehicle.

    a) Steering Technique

    b) Throttle control

    c) Precision Placement

Braking and Handling Exercise

______________

  1. Understanding the distinct advantages and disadvantages between Simple and Complex Dynamics

  2. Introduction to Threshold Braking and feeling maximum deceleration which will build confidence in the vehicle and skill in the driver.

  3. Crash avoidance steering to maintain dynamic control of the vehicle and stay within defined a maneuvering space.

Crisis Braking on the Skidpad (in Revels) will allow the driver to learn the finesse and pedal feedback necessary to achieve maximum deceleration on slippery road surfaces.

______________

  1. We will explore the real function of the Antilock Braking System and learn how the driver should utilize it’s amazing capabilities. The driver will use ABS for a crisis stop on the Skidpad and measure their stopping distance.

  2. The second phase of this exercise is to perform a crisis stop, from the same speed, using the Threshold Braking Technique and measure the performance difference compared to using the ABS system.

Skid Recovery (in MasterDrive's Skid Cars)

______________

  1. MasterDrive will explain the Skid Recovery Technique and how it works in vehicles of all types. The technique is centered on using the laws of and Handling Exercise physics to recover from a loss of directional control such as a skid on snow or ice. We will cover the role modern driver aids play in this critical maneuver and discuss how they function.

  2. The primary focus will be on the performance of the driver in moments of crisis response. We will coach drivers on using their kinesthetic connection, their ability to focus on a solution and their psychomotor skills to respond to a ‘loss of traction’ quickly and accurately.

  3. Participants will drive the Skid Recovery in a MasterDrive Skid Car with a coach at their side. Repetition is the key to developing both this skill and gaining confidence in using it so the coach will work with each individual to help them achieve a high level of performance.

Full Skid Recovery (in MasterDrive Skid Cars)

______________

Controlling a vehicle that has gone into a full spin is skill almost no one understands and few have had an opportunity to practice. We will use the MasterDrive Skid Cars again to both demonstrate and coach this life-saving technique.

We will conclude with a group discussion reviewing what each driver has learned. The Coaches will suggest practice strategies for each driver to help them carry forward the skills they have learned.
