Meet Your Guides from Back Road Van Adventures
BENJAMIN BORGENS
Benjamin Co-founded Back Road Van Adventures because of his love for the outdoors and enjoys sharing it to others to pass down in generations. Benjamin has been off-roading and camping for over 20 years and has the knowledge and wisdom to create these routes and trips to instill safety for the environment and its guests. Benjamin enjoys mapping these routes from spending thousands of hours staring at the computer using different mapping software, having paper maps spread out across the floor and actually going to explore these routes to see if they are even possible. He puts Tread Lightly practices in to every one of his routes and encourages everyone else to practice them as well.
CRAIG ARANT
Co-Founder Craig Arant discovered a deep love and enthusiasm for off roading and teaching/helping people since his involvement with a Sheriffs department search and rescue team at the age of 14. Once he was 16, his Dad trusted him with enough with his f-250 4×4 to drive on searches, and from then on has always been seeking Off-Road adventures. In the almost 40 years since then, Craig has traveled the world meeting people in all walks of life and and shared his love of the outdoors and exploration. We like to say Craig has been “overlanding” since before there was a catchy name for it, his inspiration, respect, and love of nature puts him in the perfect place to share with his enthusiasm with others.
CHEF LENA
Our gourmet Chef Lena and Sous Chef Cole prepare fresh meals daily, adding a gourmet touch to camp cooking. Guests can expect delicious breakfasts like French Toast with Sausage or Veggie scramble. Dinners feature a range of options, from Seared steak with whole-roasted sweet potatoes to Farro salad with Fennel and Apple. Lunches are served "Picnic Style" on the trail, offering premade sandwiches with chips, drinks, and fruit, along with condiments, veggies, and cheese for customization. Lena's culinary creations have turned many of our support crew into foodies, and you'll be raving about the meals every day.
3-Day Lost Coast Experience with Back Road Van Adventures
SCHEDULE
*Important note: Due to weather, wash outs, road closures, land slides, and all kinds of crazy unknown acts of Mother Nature, routes are subject to change.
DAY 1
STUNNING COASTAL VIEWS
We will start our journey leaving from the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, located in Ferndale, CA to start our trek over to the coast. We will have lunch along the trail with the stunning views of portions of the Lost Coast. On Friday evening, we will be pulling into Shelter Cove Campground for our overnight stay. We’ll be on a grass field with fire rings and picnic tables in walking distance of the beach.
DAY 2
HIT THE TRAIL
Coffee will be ready by 7am and breakfast will be served by 8am. We’ll get a little bit of an earlier start probably 9:30am (depending on the pace of the group) and promptly hit the trail into our Saturday night campsite. Saturday will be primarily offroad, it will be full of off-road instruction and amazing views overlooking the ocean and the coastal range. Saturday night we’ll camp on Usal beach. This is a “boondock” style campground.
DAY 3
ON THE BEACH
Coffee will be ready by 7am and breakfast will be served by 8am. We will have a lazy morning. Go over more off-road instruction for those interested in participating. Drive out onto the beach and show examples of self-recovery in sandy situations and have lunch on the beach. After lunch we will make our way out of Usal beach with more off road driving and pull out to the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. We’ll travel along it for just a little bit then head into the Giant Coastal Redwoods and come to our ending location of Laytonville, CA where you can just hop on Highway 101 and head home from there.
