From there, we climb up to the historic ghost town of Jerome, where we’ll take a step back in time to explore its lively streets and legendary past. Continuing on, we traverse the famous Senator Highway, once the main artery between Prescott and Phoenix in the late 1800s, leading us into the high-country wilderness. Those who have taken our Moab, British Columbia or East Coast 4x4 van training will benefit from this exciting excursion!

THE ROUTE
Expo to Phoenix Route Report

Day 1
-
Winding Canyons & Historic Stops Our adventure kicks off on Monday, May 19th, departing from Fort Tuthill around noon. We’ll travel approximately 75 miles to our first dispersed campsite, with a mix of pavement and dirt roads.
-
We’ll cruise down the iconic HWY 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, marveling at its towering red rock walls, before arriving in the mystical town of Sedona. If the group is up for it, we’ll take a short break to soak in the vibrant energy of this desert gem.
-
From there, we wind our way up the mountain to the ghost town of Jerome, a historic mining town filled with eclectic shops, saloons, and legends of lingering spirits.
-
After an afternoon of exploration, we’ll continue our journey along winding mountain roads before setting up camp under the stars at a scenic and secluded dispersed site.

Day 2
-
Conquering the Senator Highway We’ll roll out of camp around 9:00am, heading into Prescott, Arizona’s first capital city, before turning onto the famous Senator Highway—a rugged path that once served as the main connection between Prescott and Phoenix in the late 1800s.
-
After about 7 miles, we leave the pavement behind for the next day and a half, immersing ourselves in true off-road adventure. After a stretch of smooth dirt roads, we’ll tackle the more primitive and challenging sections, complete with creek crossings and rocky climbs.
-
Expect to experience a bit of of hands-on trail work, like how to utilize some shovel work or rock placement to navigate across.
-
A scenic lunch stop at the historic Palace Station gives us a break before the final push to camp, where we’ll enjoy epic views and camaraderie around the fire.

-
The next couple of miles are bumpy and will require a steady throttle foot to smooth things out. Depending on the snow melt in May on the north-facing roads, we will either continue along this road or take an alternative route should we decide to bypass this section.
-
After traveling only 10 miles (about 2 hours) on dirt, we’ll arrive at the historic Palace Station, our scenic lunch stop.
-
After our break, we’ll continue on for about 3 hours (13 miles) to our campsite for the night. Along the way, we may even encounter some exciting challenges—fallen trees may partially block the trail as in adventures past where we’ll have to put our recovery skills to work by winching it out of the way!
-
This stretch of trail will also provide great opportunities for marshalling practice and driving technique discussions, as well as countless scenic stops for incredible photo ops.
-
We’ll wrap up the day at camp, where we can relax, swap stories, and soak in the stunning Arizona wilderness.

Day 3
-
The Waterfall Climb & Crown King Finale After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll dive straight into the action with the our first obstacle - the waterfall.
-
This is a thrilling rock climb that will put our off-road skills to the test! Using our marshalling techniques from the previous day, we’ll guide each other through this technical challenge before making our way down the trail to the legendary Crown King (8 miles and about 2 hours).
-
Here, we’ll take time to explore this hidden gem of a town—whether it’s grabbing a bite at the local saloon, stocking up at the general store, or simply soaking in the old-west vibes.
-
From Crown King, we transition to a scenic, 27-miles of improved dirt road that winds its way back to the I-17 corridor. Along the way, we’ll stop at a bat cave (short hike), stunning overlooks, and quirky roadside spots like Cleator Yacht Club and Bumble Bee Stagecoach Stop. Before reaching Phoenix, we’ll do a final vehicle check and—if you’re up for it—detour for the best pie in Arizona just 10 miles down the road!
Please ensure your vehicle is ready for departure at the specified "wheels up" times each day. We look forward to a memorable adventure with breathtaking views and historical stops along the way!
