The Baja Dark Sky Expedition is a week long overland journey into some of the darkest and most remote night skies in Northern Baja, guided by Legends Overlanding with guest instruction from astro landscape photographer Nacho Pelaez of Wild Human (https://wildhumanphoto.com)

Each evening after dinner, Nacho will host a relaxed, optional 1 to 2 hour night photography session for those who want to participate. You will need your favorite camera and a tripod. Legends Overlanding handles everything else, keeping camp comfortable, well fed, and dialed so you can focus on learning, shooting, or simply soaking it all in. Throughout the expedition, food and wine are an integral part of the experience. Meals are thoughtfully curated to reflect Northern Baja’s exceptional produce, seafood, and wines, paired to match each region we explore. This is not a stationary workshop. It is a moving expedition through coast, desert, and mountains, with full days of adventure and nights dedicated to the stars.

Once everyone is home and settled, we will schedule one final Zoom session with Nacho to wrap the experience. This post expedition call focuses on color correction and finishing touches in post processing, helping you bring your night images to life and close the loop on the journey.

Day 1

Pacific Cliffs South of Ensenada

We begin in San Diego, cross the border, and travel south of Ensenada to our first remote beach camp. The evening sets the tone for the week with exceptional camp cuisine, local wine pairings, and our first night under the stars as Nacho introduces the fundamentals of night sky photography along the Pacific coast.

Day 2-3

Into the Desert

 
From the coast, we head deep into the desert south of El Rosario for a two night base camp surrounded by ancient petroglyphs and wide open silence. Days are spent exploring the desert, visiting archaeological sites, and learning the landscape. Nights are dedicated to astro photography, refining focus, composition, and technique, followed by time around the fire and the inevitable UFO stories that tend to surface under skies this dark.

Day 4-5

Into San Pedro Mártir Sierras

We then turn north and east, climbing into the San Pedro Martir Range for a dramatic change of scenery. At nearly 8,000 feet, we spend two nights among pine forests and granite peaks, hiking through alpine terrain, taking in sweeping vistas, and experiencing some of the clearest night skies on the planet. This is not marketing hype. The nearby Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de San Pedro Mártir hosts major international telescope projects with collaboration from at least seven countries, drawn here specifically for the exceptional atmospheric clarity and darkness. Under these skies, the stars feel close enough to, well…… to shoot!

Day 6

Heading Home

All good things must come to an end. On the final day, we descend out of the mountains, leave the stars behind, and head north toward the border. Expect to cross back into the US in the late afternoon or early evening on the sixth day of the expedition.

NATHAN STUART

Moving to Mexico at age 18, he traveled extensively through Baja and Central Mexico for 12 years. Now 41, Nathan has 23 years of experience traveling and overlanding throughout Mexico and Central America. He learned how to move comfortably through foreign & developing countries. In 2021 he returned to Mexico full time to co- found and guide with Legends Overlanding. Nathan is also fluent in Spanish, obsessed with Baja history, and his life’s goal is to spend as much time as possible exploring every mile of the West’s most wild places.

ALEX BURGOS

Alex grew up and studied in Ensenada, Baja California getting a degree in culinary arts. He then went on to work in Valle Guadalupe, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Spain, and Columbia. Now, back in Ensenada, Alex is part of the Legends Overlanding staff as our in-camp Chef. He will be helping us experience the places we visit through taste with the amazing cuisine he prepares for us daily!
