TRIP OVERVIEW
Class 4 roads….the name Vermont gives to roads that used to be the way people got around the state back when the revolutionary war was newly won. Also known as “ancient roads”, they still show up as public right-of-ways on town maps though they receive no maintenance of any kind.
Make no mistake, even though Class 4 roads are still considered “roads”, they have been pummeled by 200 years of rain, snow, freeze/thaw cycles.
Folks are routinely surprised and amused that anyone would label them as such. While most people overlook these byways, those in the know recognize that they offer some of the best access, views and driving challenges found anywhere in New England.
If world class breweries, country stores from another era, and old stone walls lining the road to who-knows-where are your thing………welcome!
