Background
Embarking on an exhilarating journey, the route commences in the rustic charm of Galena, IL, destined towards the North. Traversing a diverse blend of tarmac, gravel, and dirt roads, this journey also encompasses fragments of verdant forest trails. A major draw of this route is its accessibility to an array of accommodations. Remote camping spots for the wilderness lovers, RV parks for the nomadic spirits, and hotels for those seeking comfort are interspersed throughout its entire stretch.
In the early stages, the road meanders along the mighty Mississippi River, even plunging into its lower reaches at one instance. This path offers travelers a rich tapestry of sights, from quaint villages to inspiring landscapes.
As one propels northwards, the route shifts more inland, unfolding the majestic views of State Forests. SCHEDULE
Day 1
-
We will depart from Palace Campground at 9am, heading directly to the Point of Beginning in Wisconsin. This landmark is significant as it represents the starting point for all land surveys in the state.
-
Our journey will take us through some rustic farmland and then alongside the scenic Mississippi River.
-
Traveling across gravel trails and unimproved roads, with a stretch of dirt path thrown in, our route brings us to Lansing. Here, we’ll cross the river using the historic Black Hawk Bridge.
-
While our initial plan is to reach Soldiers Grove and set up camp there, we’re open to adapting depending on how many stops we need to make along the way. If we find ourselves ahead of time, we might continue our drive to Viola for a different camping experience.

Days 2 & 3
-
The journey from Soldiers Grove to Clark County involves an all off-pavement drive, primarily on gravel forest roads. The terrain becomes increasingly intriguing as we proceed. The exact park where we halt will be determined by the time available.
-
As we head northwards, we encounter a variety of forest trails of different grades across several state parks. Each of these parks offers remote camping opportunities, however, the facilities are quite primitive.

Day 4
- Clark County Stop
-
The journey involves a drive through the national forest trails of Chequamegon-Nicolet and Kimberly Clark. The route continues through Bayfield County Forest, similar to the previous day’s journey, and concludes at Point Detour.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Wildlife
In Wisconsin, there’s a wealth of opportunities to observe native fauna and flora. Particularly on the Reece, you can potentially spot two types of deer, American bittern, bald eagles, coyotes, and foxes. Additionally, in the Kimberly Clark wildlife area, you’ll find breeding Ospreys, Sharptail grouse, sandhill cranes, and wolves.

Camping
There will be multiple places to camp along the route headed north. Ultimately, we will end up at the Point Detour Campsite with its breathtaking views of Lake Superior and a great spot for fishing and hiking.
If full, another excellent option is the Little Sand Bay Campground, part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Kayaking
The Kickapoo River in Wisconsin is a popular destination for kayaking enthusiasts due to its scenic beauty and leisurely current. If desired, we can stop and arrange to go kayaking here.

Along the way
Galena, known for Grant’s Home, a historical site.; Prairie du Cien to explore the Villa Louis Victorian Mansion and the Fort Crawford Museum; Sparta, renowned for hosting the world’s largest bike: ending the journey at Delta Diner in Delta, WI, a 1950’s themed diner where you’ll celebrate the conclusion of your trip.
